He had always know that Dave was wallking a dark path of drugs and violence but Jon always thought that he could turn his brother from it. The only clue on the corpse is a message on his mobile from a girl named Zoe. Jon heads up to the hills, determined to find the killer. Meanwhile Dave's young girlfriend, Zoe, is trapped in an inner city hell. Dave and her were involved with some ver bad people and with him gone they now want their pound of flesh from her. Time is running out. When he arrives at the small town in the heart of the peaks, Spicer finds a community under attack from the Manchester crimeworld. He quickly realises that the truth of it lies in two separate places. But as Blake delves into the shady pasts of those killed, he finds connections to friends still living – including a crime lord of the city.
Matters are complicated for Blake when those who once formed their childhood gang refuse to cooperate. And when a charred corpse and satanic symbols are found in the smoking ruins, DI Jon Spicer and the city's Major Incident Team are called in. Jon Spicer quickly finds himself drawn into the depths of a horrifying underworld he didn't know existed. Soon, fresh killings bring the realisation that those responsible are prepared to commit unspeakable acts of evil in homage to their God. DI Spicer knows the atrocities must be halted, but even in his worst nightmares he could never imagine how close to his own home the investigation will take him. The only truth to his story was the fact he was found drifting off the British coast in a boat. Before his true identity can be discovered, more asylum-seekers start to die - each murdered in the same horrific way. By the time Spicer realises what links the men, he knows there's a trained assassin at large who's desperate to guard a secret of enormous magnitude. And when he ignores MI5's warnings to back-off, Jon also realises, too late that he's now the target of a man whose sole purpose is to kill. And all the while, a series of heartbreaking and enigmatic messages are being found after drifting in from sea - slowly revealing the horrific plight of a group of refugees trapped on a raft. Powerful, compelling and poignant, this is the most unmissable outing to date for DI Jon Spicer.
